power of retreating

In recent years, retreats have blossomed into a widely embraced practice, becoming a familiar topic of conversation among colleagues, on social media feeds, in newsletters, and perhaps even from that cousin you haven’t seen in years, who’s now posting pictures from a retreat on a Mediterranean island.

More and more people who gravitate towards personal growth and self-awareness are developing a desire to value and cherish their free time and how they spend it, seeking out quality moments that enrich their lives. When planning vacations, they often drop simple getaways in favor of the transformative experience of a retreat. Why is that? Are you one of them? Perhaps yes, perhaps no, or maybe it’s just about trying it out, experiencing the power of a retreat and discovering if it resonates with you.

Life in the fast lane can be overwhelmingly stimulating, pulling us into the external world and making it all too easy to lose touch with our inner selves, despite its profound depth. Thus, carving out space for a retreat becomes invaluable—a chance to rekindle that clear, loving real listening and caring attention toward ourselves, allowing us to reconnect with our hearts and vitality. This moment brings us face-to-face with our true selves, fostering an authentic and simple experience that ultimately supports us in living more fully from who we are. But how does this happen? And how can we make the power of a retreat tangible in our lives? Together, let’s explore the fundamentals: what is a retreat?

A retreat is an immersive experience, encompassing moments of practice—such as yoga asanas, meditations, movement, soulful reflection, and nature walks—often intertwined with self-study and knowledge sharing. There may also be opportunities for spa treatments, deep connections with nature, and nourishing ourselves emotionally and spiritually, all while embracing healthy eating as an act of self-love.

The first retreat is unforgettable. Not necessarily because everything feels perfectly positive from the start. The power of a retreat lies in stirring everything within us, without judgment. Yes, this includes emotions we might label as “negative,” which, upon reflection, are merely shades and facets of our essence that we must learn to embrace.

For first-timers, it’s important to remember that feeling hesitant and awkward at the beginning is entirely normal. You might find yourself wondering, “What am I doing here? Is this really for me? And who are these other people?” This happens to everyone. Once again, here lies the power of the retreat: it pulls you out of your comfort zone into a space that is actually more supportive and nurturing, though it may feel unfamiliar. We know that new experiences can frighten us initially, but when we allow ourselves to let go, we can begin to notice their benefits.

My invaluable advice is simple: you are here for a reason. So, let go of your resistance and embrace the experience wholeheartedly, with trust and devotion. Everything that surfaces is ready to be transformed.

Another key aspect of a retreat’s power lies in the concept of Sangha, which embodies the communal spirit of a retreat—the group with whom we share days of practice guided by a common intention: reconnecting with ourselves and, perhaps, with others, with nature, and the universe. Participating in a retreat means gathering with fellow seekers who share similar hearts and interests. The stronger the bonds among participants, the deeper the connection and unity with oneself becomes. Sometimes, the group may be small, offering an intimate experience oriented toward introspection; at other times, a retreat may offer a larger group dynamic, creating a field of shared knowledge that benefits everyone involved.

An intimate retreat is more than just a break from routine; it’s a conscious decision to step away from daily demands and immerse yourself in a stimulating environment. For busy professionals and dynamic individuals, this time away is essential for reconnecting with your inner self and rediscovering what truly matters. It’s a moment to listen to your inner voice, explore your true essence, and embrace the power of the heart. It’s about finding a sense of peace and clarity that often gets lost in the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Through a blend of mindful activities—yoga, movement, energy practices, meditation, and nature walks—you’ll discover a renewed sense of vitality. These powerful, rejuvenating practices not only nourish your body and mind but also alleviate stress, enhancing your overall well-being and enabling you to return to daily life with a fresh perspective and greater resilience.

Beyond physical and mental rejuvenation, a retreat offers a pathway to spiritual awakening—regardless of your religious beliefs, or lack thereof. This is a time of “soul-searching,” leading to a deeper connection with yourself and your truths, drawing you closer to your true essence. Surrounded by a small group of like-minded individuals on a similar journey, you will experience the joy of shared growth and mutual support.

True well-being encompasses more than just physical health; it includes the subtle aspects of self-care and spiritual growth. The power of a retreat lies in offering a holistic approach, addressing all these dimensions, often healing and revealing, always liberating, and harmonizing to create a complete experience that touches every aspect of your being.

“Having participated in silent and meditation retreats for 25 years, I found these retreats to be my ‘me time’ while working as a manager—a way to reset and establish a solid foundation for both my professional and personal life. At tha time, they allowed me to connect deeply with my soul, making me more resilient and centered in all my roles. The roles we play in life are like coats we wear. Retreating provides the space to take them off, creating space to rediscover our true essence, and feel safe in being ourselves. Only then can we wear them again with greater awareness and presence, perhaps with more lightness and freedom. Now, as a spiritual guide and yoga teacher, retreats continue to be a sacred time for deep self-reflection. They allow me to let go of burdens, refresh my energy and sense of newness, feel supported, and love myself more profoundly.”

“Retreats are not merely a pause; they are a journey into the heart, a dive into the self—a moment of expansion and transformation. A way to return home to an intimate relationship with yourself, built on love, care, but most importantly, renewed truth and freedom. It’s up to you to decide how you want to experience them.”

Yoga, within the context of a retreat, presents itself as a collection of practices that are both intimate and individual, yet whose effects radiate and amplify through the group. Today, various studies demonstrate that yoga, with its philosophy and life principles, serves as a powerful tool capable of addressing the needs of a constantly changing world. It not only allows us to understand the multidimensional dynamics of relationships but also provides guidance toward greater clarity within our inner worlds, and how these inner realms contribute to the co-constructed social reality within shared practice. In essence, as highlighted by this study published by the Eastern Group Psychotherapy Society, yoga offers a systematic approach that can nurture individual potential, transforming it into the foundation for the expansion of collective potential. A practice of yoga and meditation is, in fact, co-created by those who sit together in meditation—as explained in this article from HuffPost. This is also echoed in this article by Yoga Magazine, a publication founded in 1963 by Sri Swami Satyananda.

As Kristine Klussman states in her book Connection: How to Find the Life You’re Looking for in the Life You Have, “Happiness is what we are all chasing, but connection, meaning, and a sense of purpose are the cravings that truly fulfill us and lead to lasting life satisfaction. […] The beauty of connection theory is that you really only have to remember one thing in order to increase your ability to effect meaningful change across multiple dimensions of your life: make achieving authentic connection your goal.” And Yoga is a very valuable tool in this path.

When thinking of a personal retreat, it’s easy to imagine it as a momentary escape from daily life—a pause that opens and closes within a predetermined timeframe, during which rhythms, thoughts, responsibilities, and worries dissolve, leaving us feeling lighter. And just like a bubble, we expect—or even fear, after a particularly moving retreat—that it will burst once the final practice ends, vanishing as quickly as it appeared. However, that is not the reality.

The power of a retreat lies in something much more profound than merely pressing a button to switch off the whirlwinds of our minds. It reverberates throughout our existence, even after the retreat, in ways both subtle and tangible, yet incredibly impactful. Life after a retreat is never the same.

A yoga and meditation retreat offers the chance to dive deeply into our own practice, explore our inner selves, and find a sense of peace that often eludes us in the frantic pace of life. However, the significance of participating in a retreat extends beyond the experience itself; it lies in solidifying the space that has been created, becoming familiar with it, and marking its boundaries so that it remains concrete and well-defined even after the retreat, transforming into the space from which our daily lives will flow. The bubble does not burst at the end of the retreat; it thickens, more and more, from retreat to retreat, from practice to practice, until, while still retaining the flexibility and lightness of a bubble, it becomes indestructible. No one can take this space from us.

Thus, it is crucial to care for what follows the retreat, allowing and welcoming an integration phase. For each of us, this phase has different nuances and durations, depending on the nature and intensity of the retreat, but for everyone, it involves a time of vulnerability and openness, observing how the processes activated during practices settle into our lives, what emotional and mental shifts they provoke, and how we might make changes to live ever more from a state of connection, love, and beauty toward ourselves.

Fear not: during this phase, you will not be alone. The retreat guides are there for you even after the retreat ends, available to discuss and help you understand how to integrate the beauty and well-being you’ve experienced into your lives, ensuring you don’t lose it all upon returning to your routines. Instead, you can ground it—and, if you wish, make it part of new life habits and a new soulful way of being.

To this end, I have created PRACTICE BEING, an online membership program. Each month, we explore the practices and principles of yoga and meditation, alongside inspiring themes for our real daily lives, establishing a shared goal of growth and evolution for the month.

What’s the goal? To recreate a virtual retreat time, from the comfort of home—a pause from the stress of daily life at the physical, mental, and emotional levels, caring for your body, mind, and life force. Sometimes through detox, sometimes through activation, sometimes through harmonization. In every case, reconnecting with your essence and finding ways and discipline to place life at the center of your behavior and day.

Together, let’s build a momentum of light, harmony, and balance, prioritizing the spirit. Because that is the true power of an in-person retreat! Since consciousness knows no barriers, gathering around a common intention creates evolution, transformation, and expansion—bringing wonder—even when we are apart, connectiong virtually from our living-room.
